After what felt like an endless winter, it finally looks like we’ve turned the corner to better weather. The snow has melted, the temperatures are creeping up, and the ground is coming back to life as we're starting to see Spring Clover green up just a bit. But as much as we’d like to take a breather after battling through another Missouri winter, there’s no time to slow down—spring calving season is just around the corner.

That means it’s go-time for getting everything in order before the first calves hit the ground. We've already been busy with our sheep herds lambing out (If you read last week's blog we talked about that) but on the cattle side, fences need fixing, pastures need fertilizing, and the momma cows need checked to make sure their pregnancies are progressing as they should. Every spring, we go through the same routine—walking the fence lines, patching up weak spots, and making sure each pasture is ready to handle the influx of fresh, wobbly-legged calves.

It won’t be long before those first babies start arriving, and once they do, the farm will be buzzing with new life, sleepless nights, and the nonstop work that comes with making sure every calf is healthy and thriving. There’s nothing better than seeing a newborn calf take its first steps, watching them kick up their heels in the warm spring sunshine, and knowing that all the preparation paid off.

Spring calving season is one of the busiest times of the year, but it’s also one of the best. The hard work we put in now ensures a strong, healthy herd for the future—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Until next time, From the Farm
